Before I got the book, I did a little bit of research about the cover since the colors are so vibrant and that is what called my attention immediately; they're some type of beautiful boats used in Africa. That makes the book so inspiring. Also, the variety of topics of the poems makes the reading so enjoyable, I have read a few on my deck on a sunny day and it has been pleasant. I particularly liked the mix of few words from different languages that slip through the lines. The author kept most poems short, which is great for quick sessions of reading. My favorite so far is "Paris without a smile." I recommend this book!

My mother grew up in Bolivia and moved to the United States when she was 19. The rest of her family followed suit. Though I was born and grew up in the United States, I was brought up in a Bolivian family and because of it, my entire life I've felt like I have been living in a foreign country, far away from home. Though I was born in the United States and look like I'm from the United States, I experience deep culture shock every day that hardly anyone understands. The Immigrant's Chronicles is the story of a woman from Senegal who ventures to the United States, filled with her innermost hopes and dreams. Yet, hardly anything turned out how she expected, and hardly anything worked out as she planned. The Immigrant's Chronicles places a new lens on American culture - taking the seemingly familiar and revealing just how strange it really is. I related a lot with this book a lot. It resonated with me, reminding me of that deep yearning that I carry to go back home - true home.
